To organize a bench press competition, affiliate your club with the FFForce, apply the IPF rules, declare the event, define the weight and age classes, open registrations, organize the flights, recruit three referees per platform, schedule the weigh-in and the attempts, then publish the ranking. Allow 3 to 5 months of preparation.

Step 1: choose the governing framework and the rules

Which federation should you use to organize a bench press competition in France?

In France, the FFForce (Fédération Française de Force) is the governing body for strength sports, affiliated with the IPF (International Powerlifting Federation). Bench press is a discipline in its own right there, with its own competitions and records. For an official competition, your club must be affiliated and apply the current IPF rules.

Your first choice shapes everything else. For an official or qualifying competition, go through the FFForce: club affiliation, athlete licenses, compliance with the IPF rules and your league calendar. This is the recognized route, with anti-doping control for official competitions. Also decide between Classic (raw) and Equipped (with a bench shirt), because these are two distinct divisions.

If you are setting up a more open event, unaffiliated federations also exist, with their own rules. Announce the framework (FFForce or unaffiliated, Classic or Equipped) as soon as registrations open so that each athlete enters in the right division.

Step 2: define the categories and the format

Which weight classes are used in bench press?

Bench press uses the weight classes of strength sport, by sex, body weight and age. You build your categories on this model (Sub-juniors, Juniors, Open, Masters). Each athlete registers in their class, and their body weight is set at the weigh-in.

The format is set by the IPF. A single lift, the bench press, with three attempts per athlete. Only the best successful attempt counts and is used for the ranking. The competition progresses in rounds: all the athletes in a flight take their first attempt, then the second, then the third, in the order of the announced loads.

The competition bench press is more demanding than in a gym: the bar starts at arm's length, comes down to the chest, stays motionless there, then is pressed on the referee's command. Specify the division (Classic or Equipped) and the age categories, and stick to them across all flights.

Step 3: set the date, the venue and the budget

How long does it take to organize a bench press competition?

Allow 3 to 5 months. Book the venue and set the date right from the start, taking into account the FFForce calendar and that of your league. File the sporting-event declaration at least one month ahead, and open registrations 6 to 8 weeks before event day.

The venue must accommodate a competition platform with an approved bench and bar racks, a warm-up area with benches and bars, an enclosed room for the weigh-in, changing rooms and public space. A bench-press-only competition is shorter than a full meet: still plan a day structured by the flights and the weigh-ins.

The budget depends on the number of athletes and on the equipment you have. The venue rental and the approved equipment (bench, bar, plates) weigh the most. Build the budget item by item and keep a 10 to 15% margin for the unexpected. Only communicate amounts to athletes (entry fees, licenses) that you have checked at the source.

Step 4: check the rules, the federation and the authorizations

Which authorizations are needed to organize a bench press competition?

Declare the sporting event at the town hall if it is held in a single municipality, at the prefecture if it involves several, at least 30 days ahead, via the official “Déclaration des manifestations sportives” platform. On the FFForce side, affiliate the club, check the licenses, take out civil-liability insurance and follow the league's specifications.

Beyond the administrative declaration, the governing framework imposes its formalities. The FFForce requires club affiliation and valid licenses; check the license fees and the entry conditions in force on the FFForce website before announcing an amount to athletes, because the rates are revised each season. For an official competition, build anti-doping control into your organization.

Think about safety: heavy bench press requires attentive spotters and a stable bench. Trained referees and spotters are essential. Date every step on your countdown plan. Useful sources: service-public.gouv.fr for the sporting-event declaration, and the FFForce website for the rules and the procedures.

Step 5: open registrations and lock the categories

How do you manage registrations for a bench press competition?

Open an online form where each athlete registers in their weight and age class, with their license and their best reference bench press. Approve or reject each request, set a closing date, then finalize the list. Software avoids double entry and feeds the composition of the flights.

Ask each entrant for: name, sex, date of birth, target weight class, division (Classic or Equipped), club, license number and best known bench press (useful for composing the flights). The athlete registers self-service; the staff approves or rejects each request, and a confirmation email is sent automatically.

With CompetHub, you create your weight classes and each athlete registers in their own. The software manages these registrations online and feeds the composition of the flights, which avoids recopying an Excel list. The official body weight is entered at the weigh-in.

Step 6: organize the flights and the lifting order

How do you compose the flights of a bench press competition?

A flight (group) brings together the athletes who lift together. Build several groups per category if the numbers require it. The lifting order is determined by the announced load, in ascending order, and at equal load by the lowest draw number.

The composition of the flights sets the pace of the day. Keep an even group size so as not to make athletes wait between two attempts. Since there is only one lift, the flights move quickly, but the lifting order still has to be recalculated at each load.

The lifting order is not fixed in advance: it is recalculated each round according to the requested load. The lightest load lifts first; at equal load, it is the lowest draw number. Managing this recalculation by hand is the leading source of delay. A software that generates the lifting order automatically recalculates the queue as soon as an athlete announces their load.

Step 7: schedule the weigh-in, the attempts and the platform

How does the bench press weigh-in work?

The weigh-in takes place two hours before the start of the category competition, in an enclosed room, in the presence of referees. Each athlete is weighed, and their body weight is recorded, which serves for tie-breaking and for calculating IPF GL points. It is also the moment for the lifting-order draw and the declaration of the first load.

Build your schedule around this weigh-in slot. Run the categories one after another, each preceded by its weigh-in two hours before. With several flights, stagger the weigh-in slots so as not to saturate the enclosed room, and allow for the loading time between two bars.

The body weight recorded at the weigh-in is used for tie-breaking (in a tie, the lighter athlete wins) and as the basis for IPF GL points, which compare performances across categories. IPF GL points are calculated separately, with the coefficient specific to bench press.

Step 8: recruit the referees, the officials and the volunteers

How many referees are needed for a bench press competition?

You need three referees per platform: one head referee and two side referees. They judge each attempt with lights, white (good lift) or red (no lift), two whites being enough to validate. The head referee gives the commands (“Start”, “Press”, then rack). Also plan for spotters, a technical secretary, an announcer and loaders.

The platform jury is three qualified referees. In the bench press, the head referee commands the start once the bar is held at arm's length, then “Press” when the bar is motionless on the chest, then the rack. The spotters (often two or three) are essential to safety.

Around the jury, plan for the other roles: an announcer, a technical secretary who prepares the score sheets, spotters and loaders on the platform, and medical staff. Do not confuse the spotters and the loaders with the jury of three referees: these are different roles.

Step 9: prepare the approved equipment

What equipment is needed for a bench press competition?

You need an approved bench press with bar racks, a calibrated Olympic bar, calibrated color-coded plates, locking collars, a light system for the judging and a display screen for the attempts and the results.

The plates follow an official color code: 25 kg red, 20 kg blue, 15 kg yellow, 10 kg green, plus the lighter plates. Also plan for the jury table, the wired or electronic light system, foot blocks for the athletes and a screen to display the attempts and the results.

If you do not own everything, renting or borrowing from another FFForce club is common. Check the approval of the bench, the bar and the plates before event day: non-compliant equipment can invalidate the performances for an official competition. Add signage, the sound system, a first-aid kit and catering to your checklist.

Step 10: communicate and fill the competition

How do you communicate about a bench press competition?

Create a public page with the presentation, the date, the venue, the rules (FFForce or unaffiliated, Classic or Equipped) and the list of entrants by category. Share it with the clubs, with your FFForce league and on social media, display a countdown, send reminders for the weigh-in. A branded page, accessible without an account, reassures athletes and the public.

The bench press audience is targeted: strength clubs, regional athletes. Relay your announcement to neighboring clubs and to the league. Specify the framework early (FFForce or unaffiliated, Classic or Equipped) because it determines who can register. A public page with a countdown, a presentation and the list of entrants by weight class projects a serious image.

Step 11: manage the weigh-in and the attempts on event day

How do you follow the attempts of a bench press competition live?

After the weigh-in, each athlete announces their first-attempt load. The head referee runs the platform, the three referees judge with lights, and the result is entered. The best successful attempt is used for the ranking. The ranking and the public page update automatically, with no paper sheet.

Event day moves quickly. Check-in and identity verification, weigh-in in the enclosed room, lifting-order draw, then the platform starts. For each attempt, the athlete announces their load, the loader prepares the bar, the announcer calls, the athlete performs their bench press. The three referees judge, two white lights validate.

Live tracking changes the day. When the referee enters the decision, the best successful attempt automatically goes into the ranking, the lifting order of the next round is recalculated, and the public sees the ranking update automatically on the public page. This removes the paper sheets and makes the result reliable.

Step 12: publish the rankings and review the event

How do you establish the ranking of a bench press competition?

The ranking of each weight class is decided on the best successful bench press. In a tie, the lighter athlete wins. To compare athletes from different categories, you calculate IPF GL points with the coefficient specific to bench press. Publish the results on the public page.

CompetHub calculates and publishes the ranking by category on the best bench press, which builds up from the first successful attempt. IPF GL points, however, are calculated separately: CompetHub does not produce them for the bench press in Total mode. If your competition requires it, use an IPF GL bench calculator from the performances and the body weights.

Once the podiums are set, thank the volunteers, referees and sponsors, do the real financial review against the forecast, gather the athletes' feedback and archive the results and the registrations. Export the list of entrants to CSV for your archives and for sending to the FFForce. This data prepares the next edition.

How much does organizing a bench press competition cost?

How much does organizing a bench press competition cost?

The cost depends above all on the venue and the approved equipment. Owning or borrowing the bench, bar and plates greatly reduces the budget. At a minimum, count the venue rental, the insurance, the referees, the prizes and the communication. Build the budget item by item and keep a margin for the unexpected.

Here are the items to plan for, in indicative ranges to adapt to your context (they depend heavily on your region, your venue and your equipment).

ItemIndicative range
Venue and platform rentaloften the 1st item
Approved equipment (rental or depreciation)variable, often the 2nd item
Civil-liability insuranceby quote depending on the insurer
Referees and officialsvariable expense reimbursement
Prizes (medals, cups)variable
Communication and printingvariable
Catering and refreshment standvariable
Contingency margin10 to 15%

On the revenue side: entry fees per athlete, licenses, the refreshment stand, local sponsors and a possible grant from the town hall. A well-run refreshment stand often covers a notable share of the costs.

Countdown plan and checklist to organize your bench press competition

A countdown plan avoids oversights on the authorizations, the weigh-in and the equipment.

  • 5 to 3 months out: affiliate the club with the FFForce, choose the division (Classic or Equipped), book the venue, set the date, build the forecast budget.
  • 3 to 2 months out: file the sporting-event declaration (at least 30 days ahead), define the weight and age classes, secure the approved equipment.
  • 2 to 1 month out: open online registrations, communicate to the clubs and the league, recruit the three referees per platform and the spotters.
  • 2 weeks out: compose the flights, prepare the weigh-in and attempt schedule, finalize the equipment checklist, renew the communication.
  • Event day: check-in, weigh-in (two hours before each category), draw, the three attempts in rounds, three-white-light judging, automatic display of the results.
  • Afterward: publish the rankings (on the best attempt, and IPF GL points calculated separately), export the list of entrants to CSV, give thanks, do the financial review, archive.

The common mistakes to avoid

  • Declaring too late. The sporting-event declaration is filed at least 30 days ahead, and the FFForce affiliation even earlier. Anticipate from 3 months out.
  • Mistiming the weigh-in. It must start two hours before the start of the category, in an enclosed room. A weigh-in that overruns delays the whole day.
  • Forgetting the lifting order by load. The order is calculated by ascending load, not by bib number. Managing it by hand causes errors and delays.
  • Neglecting the spotters. Heavy bench press requires attentive and trained spotters. Safety comes before everything.
  • Confusing best attempt and IPF GL. The category ranking is on the best bench press; comparing categories with one another requires IPF GL points, calculated separately.
  • Managing scores on paper. Centralizing the attempts and the decisions of three referees by hand distorts the ranking. Live entry makes everything reliable.

FAQ: organizing a bench press competition

Which federation should you use to organize a bench press competition in France?

In France, the FFForce (Fédération Française de Force) is the governing body for strength sports, affiliated with the IPF. Bench press is a discipline in its own right there. For an official competition, your club must be affiliated and apply the current IPF rules.

How does a bench press competition run?

The competition is managed by weight class and age category, in flights. Each athlete has three bench press attempts, and only the best successful attempt counts. The ranking of each category is decided on the best bench press, with ties broken by the lightest body weight.

How many attempts does each athlete get in the bench press?

Each athlete gets three bench press attempts. Only the best successful attempt is kept and used for the weight-class ranking. The lifting order is determined by the requested load, in ascending order, and at equal load by the draw number.

How is a bench press attempt judged?

Three referees judge each attempt. Once the bar is held at arm's length and motionless, the head referee gives the start command; the athlete lowers the bar to the chest, holds it motionless, receives the “Press” command, then the command to rack. The referees show a white light (good lift) or a red light (no lift); two whites are enough to validate.

Can you organize a bench press competition for free?

You always pay for certain items (venue, approved equipment, referees, insurance). The management tool, however, can be free: CompetHub is free to start, with no credit card. You manage registrations, flights, attempts and ranking with no software cost, which lightens the budget of a first competition.

How is the bench press ranking established?

The ranking of each weight class is decided on the best successful bench press. In a tie, the lighter athlete wins. To compare athletes from different categories, you use IPF GL points (with the coefficient specific to bench press), calculated separately.
