Which software to run a bench press competition?

CompetHub is online software to run a bench press competition. It reuses the powerlifting meet engine set to a single lift: it manages registrations by weight class, the weigh-in, the flights, the entry of the three attempts, three-white-light judging, keeps the best successful attempt and publishes the ranking by weight class on a branded public page. The bench press preset configures the lift in one click.

The concrete problem of the bench press organizer

A bench press competition seems simple, but the flow stays demanding. Each athlete has three attempts on a single lift, in precise weight and age classes. The weigh-in takes place two hours before and fixes the official body weight. Tracking all of this in Excel means recopying every registration, sorting each athlete into their class and keeping the weigh-in sheet apart.

On event day, the pace speeds up. The lifting order recalculates with each announced load, from lightest to heaviest, and three referees judge each attempt with lights. Recording successful bars and the best attempt by hand, between two attempts, multiplies the errors.

Then comes the ranking. The best successful bench press breaks each class, the lightest wins on a tie, and the comparison between classes is done with IPF GL points. On a spreadsheet, one entry error distorts the standings. Dedicated software centralizes this data and makes every figure reliable.

Why not run a bench press competition in Excel?

Excel forces you to recopy every registration, to track three attempts per athlete and to record the best one by hand. One recording error distorts the ranking. Dedicated software centralizes registrations, weigh-in, attempts and ranking, and removes the recopying.

How CompetHub runs a bench press competition

CompetHub links each building block of the software to the reality of a bench press competition. Here is how.

Online registrations and validation

Each athlete registers online in their weight class. The staff validates or rejects each request and checks in those present (check-in) on event day. Transactional emails are sent automatically on registration, on validation and on rejection. You keep a clean list, with no duplicates and no file to cross-check.

Weight classes and bench press preset

You create the weight, age and sex classes of your competition, modeled on powerlifting classes. On the lift side, you enable the meet format in Total mode and apply the bench press preset: the meet is then set to a single lift, the bench press, and does not show the two other slots.

Weigh-in and flights

At the weigh-in (two hours before the class starts), you record the body weight and the draw number of each athlete, directly in the tool. You then build your flights (lifting groups) and assign the athletes to them. Everything is centralized: no more weigh-in sheet kept apart from the rest.

Entry of the three attempts

For each athlete, you declare the load of each of their three attempts then you judge the attempt as successful or missed. CompetHub keeps only the best successful attempt, which serves as the total for the ranking. The statuses are visible at a glance, with no paper sheet to re-centralize.

Lifting order and judging with lights

On the platform, CompetHub calculates the lifting order of each round, from the lightest load to the heaviest and broken by the draw number on an equal load, and highlights the athlete on the platform and the next one. The judging is done with the three referee lights (white or red), the verdict being taken by majority, then kept with the attempt. There is no attempt timer in the tool.

Ranking by weight class on total

CompetHub ranks each weight class on the best successful bench press and breaks ties by the lightest body weight. The ranking is built live: an athlete enters the ranking from their first successful attempt. On the other hand, IPF GL points, which compare athletes from different weight classes, are not calculated by CompetHub for the bench press in Total mode. This coefficient-based ranking remains in the hands of the governing body or an external calculator.

Public results page

You publish a public page in the competition's colors (logo, colors), with the presentation, the participants and the ranking by weight class on total. The ranking updates there automatically during the competition, without the spectator reloading the page. It is accessible without an account. The list of registrants exports to CSV for your archives.

How do I create a bench press competition with CompetHub?

Create your account, add the competition, enable the meet format in Total mode, apply the bench press preset and define the weight classes, then open registrations. On event day, you record the weigh-in, build the flights, declare and judge the three attempts, and the ranking by weight class on total is calculated, ready to publish.

The flow handled for the bench press

The bench press is not played out in an elimination tree: it is handled by weight classes, flights and attempts, like a meet. CompetHub tracks the single lift and the three attempts, keeps only the best successful attempt, then ranks on total by class. For organizers who pair other disciplines, the bracket formats (single-elimination, double-elimination, pools) remain available on classic competitions.

Which format to handle for a bench press competition?

The bench press is handled by weight classes, flights and attempts, not in an elimination bracket. In CompetHub, you enable the meet format in Total mode set to a single lift: the tool tracks the three attempts, keeps the best successful one, and publishes the ranking by weight class on total.

Does CompetHub replace Excel for a bench press competition?

Yes. Where Excel forces recopying and manual sorting, CompetHub centralizes the registrations, the weigh-in, the flights and the attempts, then ranks by class on the best bench press. You keep the history and export the registrants to CSV. IPF GL points remain to be calculated separately.

CompetHub compared with other software

Frequently asked questions

How do I create a bench press competition online?

Create a CompetHub account, add your competition, enable the meet format in Total mode and apply the bench press preset (a single lift), define your weight classes, then open registrations. On event day, you record the weigh-in, build the flights, declare and judge the three attempts, and the ranking by weight class on total is calculated.

Is the software free?

Yes, CompetHub is free to start, with no credit card. You manage registrations, weigh-in, flights, attempts and ranking, and publish the public results page for free, before deciding to go further.

Does CompetHub handle a single-lift competition?

Yes. The meet format can be set to a single lift for the bench press, via the dedicated preset. Each athlete has up to three bench press attempts, and CompetHub keeps only the best successful attempt, which serves as the total for the ranking of the weight class.

How is the bench press ranking calculated?

CompetHub ranks each weight class on the best successful bench press, broken by the lightest body weight. IPF GL points (which compare athletes from different classes) are not calculated by CompetHub for the bench press: this coefficient-based ranking remains in the hands of the governing body or an external calculator.

How are the attempts judged?

Three referees judge each attempt and light a white light (successful attempt) or a red one (failed); two white lights are enough to validate. In CompetHub, you enter the three lights and the verdict is taken by majority, then kept with the attempt. CompetHub has no attempt timer.

Can the public follow the results?

Yes. CompetHub publishes a branded public page, accessible without an account, which presents the competition, the participants and the ranking by weight class on total. The ranking updates automatically during the competition.

Bench press data verified on 15 June 2026 according to the IPF rules (one lift, three attempts, ranking on the best attempt by weight class) and the French framework of the FFForce (Fédération Française de Force, governing body for powerlifting), which organizes separate bench press competitions. The bench press is not an Olympic sport. IPF GL points fall under the governing body and the official calculators. Author: the CompetHub team.
